1. Natural Surroundings

From forests to farmlands, the natural side of Powhatan runs deep. There are also designated, protected areas to enjoy in Powhatan, including the Powhatan Wildlife Management Area and Powhatan State Park, both of which offer extensive networks of walking and hiking trails and gorgeous scenery.

2. Life on the River

With the James River forming the northern border of Powhatan and the Appomattox River lying along the southern, residents are never far from the water. Of course, fishing and kayaking are relaxing ways to enjoy the rivers; however, whitewater rafting, tubing, paddle boarding and even snorkeling are also popular activities for residents of Powhatan.

3. Historical Sites

The history of Powhatan County dates all the way back to the 1700s, and there are many structures remaining from yesteryear. The charm that comes with living amongst 100-plus year old homes, an old jail from the late 1770s, a courthouse from the 1800s and a variety of other historical sites is undeniable.

7. Accessibility

Getting to and from Powhatan, VA could not be easier, thanks to Route 60. This roadway runs east to west through Powhatan and connects drivers with Highway 288. Interstates 64, 95 and 295 are all set just outside the county lines and are all easily accessible from the major roadways within Powhatan.

8. The Neighborhoods

The neighborhoods in Powhatan are numerous and offer diverse surroundings.  There are high-end, gated communities filled with newer construction homes, such as Bel Crest, Founders Bridge and Greywalls,  as well as cozy, established neighborhoods with tree-lined streets, including Mill Station, Branchway Forest, Mill Quarter, Aston, Sherwood, Lake Shawnee and French Hill.

In Virginia, you already enjoy a lower property tax rate than much of the country. That being said, residents of Powhatan have an advantage over residents of Richmond when it comes to taxes. While houses in Richmond are assessed at $1.20 for every $100 of home value, homes in Powhatan are assessed at just $0.90 per $100 (as of 3-2017).
